The Geha Mental Hospital contains 170 beds, and it can be increased in size to become a 350-bed hospital in the future. Its plot is almost square, of limited size, covering an area of 10 acres. The medical programme, widely discussed with doctors, nurses and psychiatrists, required the creation of a relaxed atmosphere for the patients, who spend several weeks in the hospital. Consequently a strictly defined grid system of pavilions, separated by spacious patios and gardens for patients' rest and relaxation was used.
The hospital consists of seven pavilions. Three of these, the admission, medical treatment and dining-hall pavilions, are placed along a main axis.On either side of this axis are two pavilions containing wards. All the seven pavilions are separated by large garden courtyards. The chosen grid of 6.4 metres was carried out throughout the whole design pattern of built-up volumes, patio enclosures and open garden spaces.
