Distinctive features of Tel-Aviv's townscape are the pilotis on which most of the apartment buildings are raised in the residential quarters of the town. This effort was achieved on the part of several avant-garde architects in the early thirties. They waged a savage struggle against the existing bye-laws. The spacious voids between the pillars added greater width to the narrow residential streets and created a shaded streetscape by connecting the pavements with the planted garden areas under the houses.
